Family Assist

These are families with dependent children and a veteran that has sustained a wound, illness or injury during active service and that is recognised , or under review, by Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA). The veteran is post discharge or in the process of transitioning out of the ADF (within 2 months) and generally served in modern conflicts such as Afghanistan, Cambodia, East
Timor and Iraq. There is crisis (usually emotional or financial) and the family require complex case management.

Issues faced

Some of our families have little or no support structures leaving them isolated and vulnerable and facing a future very different from what they planned and hoped for. Legacy Brisbane has identified the following issues:

  • Grief and loss
  • Physical and mental health including self-care
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Limited support from family
  • Financial crisis
  • Navigating benefits and entitlements processes
  • Housing
  • Employment and career concerns
  • Education
  • Disability

How Legacy Helps

Complex case management – Legacy Brisbane (ATDP trained Community Service Officers)
assists families and advocates on specific issues and refers to relevant services. This may
relate to practical or emotional support and linking the family or child/ren to the relevant
organisation; and

  • Financial support for education depending on need Overview of Legacy Services for Young Families
  • Emergency support – Provided by Legacy Brisbane on a needs basis where no other support is available. This will be through a grant or voucher (to obtain food or fuel in emergency situations or other essential bills).
  • Peer support network
  • Day activities
  • Bursaries and Trusts – Staff can nominate children and young people if they fit
    the relevant criteria. The Trusts and Bursaries include: Ted Smout Youth Medal, Jack Bean Trust Memorial Trust, 2/2nd Australian Anti-Tank Regiment Association Bursary, Australian War Memorial Legacy Youth Visit, The Limbless Soldiers Association Bursary, Save St Martin’s Bursary and NAA (Capricornia Sub Section) Sailing Bursary.
