Legacy Giving Day 2025

Here is a document that will provide information about donating on Giving Day.

Volunteer Week – May 2025

This week is National Volunteer Week. It is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering. Every year it is a celebration of the diverse passions and talents everyone brings to volunteering. Our Legatees and volunteers are people with many talents and many reasons for joining the Legacy family.

This year’s theme is about recognising the many faces of volunteering—people from different walks of life who show up in all kinds of ways to make a difference. At Legacy Brisbane, we see that every day.

I came across some statistics recently about why people volunteer. Often, the motivations are straightforward—parents getting involved in their kids’ school or sport, or people helping out because it’s part of a cultural or community expectation.

And yet, when I think about our Legatees and volunteers, those reasons don’t quite fit.

The service you give to Legacy is quieter than most. It’s not driven by obligation or convenience. It’s not flashy or public. It’s a phone call made at the right time, a quiet visit to someone who needed to talk, an hour spent sorting through paperwork or checking on someone who hasn’t been themselves lately.

Some of you come to Legacy because of a personal connection to Defence. Others arrive through entirely different paths. But the thread that ties you together is the same: you choose to give your time, not because you have to—but because you care.

And what a difference it makes.  Just today, I saw a Legatees, volunteers, staff, and external supporters work together to really support one of our beneficiaries in a very difficult situation.  That collaboration, commitment and services highlights what you all do – help the loved ones of veterans when, where and how they need support.

Legacy Brisbane could not do what it does without you. We say that often, but I want you to really hear it. The impact of your presence—your time, your care, your consistency—cannot be overstated. You walk beside people during some of the most difficult and vulnerable seasons of their lives, and you do it without fanfare.

So this week, during National Volunteer Week, I simply want to say thank you.

Thank you for showing up.
Thank you for making the call.
Thank you for putting on your Legacy pin and stepping into someone’s story.

I hope you take a moment this week to reflect on the role you play. You are part of something deeply meaningful—and I am so grateful you’re here.

THANK YOU!!!

Yours in Legacy

Dr. Annabel McGuire
President, Legacy Brisbane

For the last three years, Redcliffe Caboolture and Bribie Island Contact Group has participated in the Dickson and Longman Seniors Expos run by our local Members. We use these events to promote Legacy and seek to attract volunteers/Legatees. We have been successful.

At this years event, we were offered a list of know events by the Seniors Enquiry Line staff and thought it could be shared with other groups. To see the list for the remainder of 2024, click here. If you need any further information, feel free to contact either Rob Murray or Reg Frankel.

Free Dementia Apps

Dementia Australia has two free phone apps available to assist those who may be suffering from the onset of dementia. The first allows you to track your progress while the second assists in making your home dementia friendly. Both apps are available through your app store or at the Dementia Australia website. Read below for more information or visit Dementia Australia for more information.

BrainTrack is a free app that helps you monitor and understand changes in cognition over time, which you can use to start a conversation with your GP. The app will help you explore this common concern, providing brain health information through fun, travel-themed games that test your cognition. The resulting conversation and monitoring may lead to an earlier diagnosis of dementia.

The Dementia-Friendly Home app is available for tablets and mobile phones. Using interactive 3D game technology Unreal Engine, the app provides carers with ideas to make their home more accessible for people living with dementia. Many of the app suggestions are small, inexpensive solutions ranging to more significant changes.

Clubs can apply for grants for their beneficiaries of up to $500 for assessments and depending on the outcome a further $500 may be available for treatment per health and wellbeing issue. Young Endeavour Youth Scheme

Legacy Australia has successfully secured three berths on the prestigious Young Endeavour Youth Scheme in the coming months. This scheme, a bicentennial gift to our nation from the United Kingdom, revolves around the Sail Training Ship (STS) Young Endeavour – a magnificent two-masted, square-rigged brigantine. Purpose-built to deliver an unparalleled development program at sea for young Australians, the STS Young Endeavour is operated by a distinguished crew from the Royal Australian Navy, trained specifically to manage this tall ship and facilitate the youth development program.
